Westlake, Ohio, USA – February 16, 2017 - Nordson Corporation (Nasdaq: NDSN) has acquired InterSelect GmbH a German designer and manufacturer of selective soldering systems used in a variety of automotive, aerospace and industrial electronics assembly applications. The transaction is not material to Nordson results, and terms of the deal were not disclosed.

“The InterSelect acquisition follows Nordson’s recent acquisition of the assets of ACE Production Technologies Inc., another high quality provider of selective soldering systems, and expands our participation in an attractive growth niche within the electronics assembly market,” said Joseph Stockunas, Corporate Vice President for Nordson’s Advanced Technology Systems segment. “InterSelect’s selective soldering solutions, like ACE’s, are adjacent and highly complementary to Nordson’s existing conformal coating and optical inspection solutions and are sold to the same set of customers. InterSelect’s largely European business is an ideal complement to ACE’s strong North American presence, and we expect to leverage Nordson’s global footprint to grow both businesses more rapidly.”

Founded in 2010, the business operates with 7 full time employees and a network of outsourced partners and will become part of Nordson’s Advanced Technology Systems segment.  InterSelect’s end markets are expected to continue growing at a mid to high single digit rate over the next several years driven by increasing electronic content in automobiles and electric vehicles, and further penetration of electronics in areas such as avionics, industrial automation and appliances. Going forward, Nordson intends to operate InterSelect together with ACE Production Technologies under the new name Nordson SELECT.

Selective soldering is the process of soldering specific components to printed circuit boards and molded modules. The approach is chosen for processes where components could be damaged by the heat of a reflow oven in a traditional surface mount (SMT) assembly process or where reliability dictates through-hole mounting.  Entry level selective soldering is often used as an efficiency and quality improvement solution over hand soldering.

Nordson Corporation engineers, manufactures and markets differentiated products and systems used to dispense, apply and control adhesives, coatings, polymers, sealants, biomaterials, and other fluids, to test and inspect for quality, and to treat and cure surfaces.  These products are supported by application expertise and direct global sales and service.  Nordson serves a wide variety of consumer non-durable, durable and technology end markets including packaging, nonwovens, electronics, medical, appliances, energy, transportation, construction, and general product assembly and finishing.  Founded in 1954 and headquartered in Westlake, Ohio, the company has operations and support offices in nearly 40 countries.  Visit Nordson on the web at www.nordson.com, www.twitter.com/Nordson_Corp or www.facebook.com/nordson.

Your wave soldering machine went up in years? Or push for technological reasons more and more to the limits of your production capacities or possibilities?

Consciously or unconsciously, once you economically start analyze the topic: "soldering of THT components", you will realize; by using a Selective Soldering machine you will not just save money, but simultaneously react more flexible to the needs of your clients - and often at an identical cycle time.

Beginning with operating costs; comparing with Wave Soldering, Selective Soldering will cut your average running costs five times regarding the following reasons:

  • Less use of electricity.

  • Less solder consumption, because of less dross.

  • Less flux consumption, because of Selective MicroDrop Fluxing.

  • No additional taping to protect critical areas.

  • Less rework as on Wave Soldering.

  • No cleaning of solder pallets.

  • No cleaning of soldered PCBs.

The InterSelect Selective Soldering machines are very easy, user-friendly and freely programmable, each solder joint can be individually set and adjusted. For example, on a solder joint with copper-containing ground connections, soldering time can be extended at precisely this solder joint. This allows you to achieve perfect soldering results despite "difficult conditions". In most applications, even for soldering PCB`s with two-sided SMD assembly, no product-specific solder masks are needed in selective soldering. This not only saves costs, but also reduces the processing time of the products in your production.

The mostefficient way to achieve the above benefits is the InterSelect Inline Selective Soldering System IS-I-508. This Inline Selective Soldering machine is built with two independent zones in one machine and can process PCB`s up to 508x508mm (20x20 inches). In Zone 1, a MicroDrop Fluxer is in use and mount on a high-speed X-Y-Axis system, the "Flux Drop" will be placed precisely on the previously programmed area of the PCB. In the second step, the flux will be activated by a large upper and lower preheater and at the same time the PCB`s will be preheated and finally prepared for soldering. The infrared emitters have an output of 1.5 to 4.5 KW, which automatically adapt to the PCB size. This save energy and reduce running costs.

After fluxing and preheating the PCB moves into zone 2 of the machine, which is equipped according the configuration with 1 or 2 InterSelect titanium solder pots.

Soldering nozzle with an outside diameter from 3 to 20mm are standard, the selective soldering nozzle work in combination with the solder pot and axis system, the soldering take place with an accuracy of 0.1 mm.

For manufacturing much smaller quantities, the IS-T-300 Selective Soldering System with a footprint from just 1m² provide also lot possibilities. And this for a great Price!

We would like to take this opportunity to say: “Thank you!” - to our customers, employees, suppliers and distributors for a good and successful cooperation in 2015.

Only together we were able to reach our goals, like; continued expansion of the key markets, an increase of the market share especially with the “Modular-Inline-Systems“ and expansion and improvement of our machine portfolio and sales network.

The year 2015 was characterised by several follow-up purchase orders from existing customers, which already use our selective soldering machines. In combination with orders from new customers especially for the new developed “Entry-Level” machines like the IS-T-460S and in the upper premium Inline segment especially the IS-I-508. Not to forget, the new and further development of several options, such as the full automatic nozzle cleaning system and the successful further development of the long life wettable solder nozzles.

With Mr. Philipp Grosse, we increased our customer presence for sales in Europe, in addition, we have recorded a strong growth all over the Asia-Pacific region. We are ready and prepared for a successful 2016, we will continue pursue our targets, customer focus and convince our customers with new innovations.

We wish you a merry Christmas, health and success in the New Year, as well a good cooperation – as a strong Team in this fast-moving modern world.
